Which KitchenAid mixer is better? The KitchenAid Pro 5 quart or the Artisan? Find out which one we like more and why, as well as what they both have to offer in this brief post.
The Artisan has a number of perks and innovations that the Pro doesn’t, such as a better jar and larger range of speeds. However, it also has these features that we don’t love: a smallish bowl capacity, an overly complicated tilt head design (in comparison), and no power cord storage. Read on to find out more about the pros and cons of the two mixers.
When we first started this comparison, the Artisan was our number 1 choice. Its all-metal construction along with its performance were impressive enough to bring home our top honor. We had not been impressed by any other mixer in this price range and when we compared it to comparable mixers that cost a little bit more, we also found it to be better than most.
We’re glad that our original assessment was right on as far as both of these mixers go; they’re both good performers in their own right, they just have some features we like better with one being better than the other depending on what’s most important to you.
Kitchenaid Pro 5 Quart vs Artisan Design
The KitchenAid Pro 5 quart has a more contemporary look in comparison to the Artisan. We like to think of the Artisan as having an ’80s vibe, but it’s still an excellent mixer nonetheless. They both have a stainless steel bowl and a black finish on the power hub, which is where the similarities end.
With its stainless steel exteriors and muted colors, the Pro definitely looks like something you’d find in a modern kitchen. It’s also just a tad bit smaller than its counterpart, at 8 x 14 inches while the Artisan is 8 x 15 inches.
The KA Pro 5 quart mixer has a tilt head design, but it’s an inconvenient one. You have to fully remove the head before you can add ingredients to the bowl and while it isn’t a big hassle if you’re only doing a small amount, it can get time-consuming if you’re doing something big, like kneading bread.
The Artisan 5 qt on the other hand has a swivel head that allows the beater and dough hook attachments to move freely even with the tilt of the bowl below them. This feature makes adding ingredients easier than with its counterpart and we think that this is definitely what makes up for its smaller bowl capacity (1 more cup).
Difference Between KitchenAid Pro 5 And Artisan?
The Artisan has a larger jar than the Pro, but it doesn’t have a locking lid. We like this feature because it keeps the machine dry and protected when it’s not in use, but we don’t like that you have to remove the bowl to add ingredients.
The KA Artisan also has a better motor and motor speed range than the Pro (more on this in a bit). It also has an onboard timer with five different settings which can be useful if your mixer isn’t plugged into an outlet (which we recommend!). The Pro only has one setting, which is annoying.
Kitchenaid Pro 5 Quart vs Kitchenaid Artisan: Thought Leaders
If you’re looking for something that has more than one speed setting, the Artisan is your best bet. This allows you to control what kind of mixing you’re doing at any given time. More challenging tasks can be done at a higher speed while lighter jobs can be done at a lower speed.
The Pro on the other hand only has one speed and it’s not that great. In our tests, it didn’t perform as well as we had expected it to and made some things worse than they should have been (like kneading bread or making homemade pizza dough).
What Comes With The KitchenAid Artisan Mixer?
The Artisan features an intuitive LCD touch display as well as an easy-to-use interface panel. However, our favorite feature is the “Smart Control”, which allows you to adjust the speed of your machine up and down with just a simple touch. This is especially useful when you’re adding ingredients to be mixed (which can be done while it’s still running).
The Pro 5 quart comes with a jar, the bowl, and all the attachments plus a power cord and instruction manual. The Pro also has a handy container that you can use to store small parts like nuts or bolts when they aren’t in use.
The Artisan comes with three different attachments: dough hook, flat beater, and wire whip. It also has a small box where you can store all of your spare parts, which is always handy. Also included in the box is the bottle of non-stick cooking spray.
Kitchenaid Pro 5 Quart vs KitchenAid Artisan Features:
When it comes to the control panel, only the Pro has a touch control, which we prefer because it requires less effort (and no reaching for a remote). The Artisan’s knob system is easy to use and you can adjust the speed of your mixer with just one lever on the side.
Regarding construction, both are made of stainless steel. The Pro is all metal and has a more contemporary look, while the Artisan is also stainless steel, but it doesn’t have as high a polish.
The KA Pro has a better motor on speed range. This makes it better for complicated tasks like kneading bread, but it’s not as good at lighter jobs like making homemade pizza dough. The Artisan’s motor allows you to adjust speeds up and down, which is especially useful when adding ingredients to be mixed together (directions on how to use this feature in the manual).
Is 5 Qt KitchenAid Mixer Big Enough?
If you are making large batches of batter, the answers to your question is maybe. It’s a hefty 5 quart mixer and the bowl is smaller than some other mixers, so it’s important to use it for things that it can handle.
If you’re simply mixing 2 or 3 cups at a time and have an abundance of counter space, then the Pro is more than enough. However, if you do have a large kitchen (or family), we advise you to go with something bigger.
How To Use A Kitchenaid Mixer To Make Mashed Potatoes?
It’s super easy and simple to use a KitchenAid mixer to make mashed potatoes. To begin with you’ll need to have peeled the potatoes and cut them into smaller pieces (a potato peeler can help with this).
Next, fill the KitchenAid bowl with the peeled potatoes and sprinkle some salt over top. Turn on the mixer using speed 2 and let it go until they’re broken down. Then, turn it up to speed 4 and push the butter through a strainer over the potatoes.
Lastly, add the cream and butter of your liking and you’re good to go. You can then use a spatula to mix it up or choose the “stir” function on your mixer. Easy!
What Size Bowl Does KitchenAid Mixer Come With?
The bowl for the Pro comes in at 5 quarts, which if you’re doing smaller batches isn’t that big of a deal. However, if you’re doing something that requires more than what the 5 quart bowl can hold, then having to stop and mix in batches is going to be frustrating.
We like the bowls that come with the Artisan better because they’re deeper (they hold 2 cups of ingredients instead of 1 cup like the Pro’s bowl). If you’re planning on doing bigger batches, or just want to have a bit more space, then we recommend going with an Artisan.
What Speeds Does A KitchenAid Mixer Come With?
The KitchenAid Pro 5 quart comes with two speeds – regular and turbo. The speed on which you choose to use is completely up to you. This is especially true if you’re baking something that requires more precision.
The Artisan mixer, on the other hand, has five different speeds. These speeds are all variable.
If you plan on doing a lot of different kinds of baking, or just want to have more control over what you’re doing (especially if you’re a more experienced baker), then the Artisan is definitely your best bet.
Kitchenaid Pro 5 Quart vs KitchenAid Artisan Warranty and Customer Service:
It’s important to know that the warranties provided by kitchenaid mixers aren’t all the same. The Pro 5 quart comes with a three year limited warranty on parts and labor and one year full warranty on the motor. Delamination is covered under this warranty for up to 5 years.
Are KitchenAid Mixers Safe Near Kids?
Yes, KitchenAid mixers are safe near kids. However, we would recommend that if you have any small children in the home, you should have them supervised while they’re working with your mixer (especially if they’re under the age of 8).
The biggest concern that we have with the KitchenAid 5 quart mixer is its cord and plug. Because of this issue, we only recommend using this mixer in an all-around kitchen (in a place where it’s easy to reach).
If this mixer is kept in an area that’s hard to reach and there are small children around who will play with it (which can be very dangerous), then this could pose a harm to your child or someone else’s.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a simple and straightforward machine, the KA Pro 5 quart will serve you well. It’s not perfect, but that’s to be expected when it’s not even released yet. The design is clean and uncluttered and we think that it has a cool look. The beater attachments are also great quality and the power hub is powerful enough for most tasks (countertop performance isn’t as good as a stand mixer, but it does the job).
If we had to choose between the Artisan and the Pro though personally, we would go with our favorite mixers over and over again.
