Review: KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer: KSM-150

Ever since I was little, I loved making cakes and cookies. To do so properly, one needs a stand mixer. In fact, if you want to be the best baker in your neighborhood, the stand mixer is essential.

So when my KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer arrived at my door (courtesy of Amazon), I had very high expectations for it: my cake artistry has been on point for many years! Well, these expectations were met and exceeded! The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer exceeded all my baking needs and wants.

The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer is a heavy duty machine and well built. My first impression was that it feels super solid: it weighs in at a whopping 15 pounds! The head of the mixer is designed to tilt upward so that you can see and level your ingredients as they are being mixed (and there is a very handy bowl lift built right into the tilt head so that you can dump batter into the bowl without having to first remove the stand). The paddle head locks securely in place with one pull on the locking knob; the motor is very quiet.

As a baker and a home cook, I have to say that the attachments of the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer are a big deal. The extra long beater attachment that I can use to mix much larger quantities of dough is awesome (and also helps me save my back by making sure I don’t over-mix my dough). The extra-long paddle head attachment is great for thinner batter or cloud icing (when you’re making buttercream frosting or peanut butter frosting). The whisk is all metal and very sturdy, and the wire whip is perfect for light whipping.

I have used the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer more than any other machine I’ve ever owned. I love it so much that I use it to make my daughter’s birthday cakes, which means that we cook up a double batch of frosting (yum!) so we can both put in the same amount of time with our decorating. My only complaint at all is that I wish the cream beater head was a little taller (I have to stand on one foot and reach down to get the ingredients for mixing into the bowl).

KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

One word: POWERFUL! This machine mixes, kneads and bakes like no other. It is VERY heavy and well built. The attachments are great and cover all your needs.

The tilt head feature is a little awkward at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll love it. The controls are very intuitive and make sense right away.

The power cord is way too short (only 3′ long). It’s a pain in the butt when I’m doing a lot of cooking.

This is a great machine, but it feels like you’re making a cake or cookies with a tractor. It’s very heavy and with the heavy attachments, it’s hard to wash by hand. Make it easier and add a few more feet of cord!

I have owned this machine for several years. I LOVE IT! I make many cakes and these attachments come in handy on this machine. I also use the wire whip on cookie doughs, etc. and it works great (I use my own whisk). The tilt head is a little awkward at first, but once you get used to it, you’ll love it. The controls are very intuitive and make sense right away.

There is no way I would trade this machine or mFG for any other brand of stand mixer. The reason I would not recommend this machine is because of the cord and the fact that it is so heavy! This machine makes flour and bread doughs in minutes that my “other” stand mixer could not do in hours (and I don’t have to use two arms!). Also, with the extra-long beater, it takes very little time to mix lots of ingredients together for cake batter or cookie doughs.

KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer vs. The Competition

The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer is better than the competition for many reasons. The attachments are really what sets this machine apart from all the rest: it’s hard to get extra long beaters anywhere else. A Cake Boss stand mixer will have multi-purpose beaters, but they are not extra long like the KitchenAid metal ones (metal is more durable, plus they can’t bend).

Another reason why this machine is better than the competition is power: it’s a workhorse. Plus, there are many accessories that other mixers don’t have (like all metal beaters). They all make crazy claims about how fast their machines are, but I cannot tell a difference in the speed of any of them. So why pay twice as much for the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer?

KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer (KSM-150) Review Summary – A Solid Purchase!

The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer is an excellent machine and delivers what it promises: superior performance. I would recommend this to anyone who has more than a casual interest in baking, because it will produce high quality results. I’ve been baking with the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer for many years (since it was first released) and I still love using it.

I’m really surprised how long this machine has lasted; even after years and years of heavy use, it looks almost new. And if you buy the extended warranty, you won’t have to worry about repairs because they are covered by the manufacturer (and they can also be covered under your homeowner’s policy).

As a heavyweight mixer that can be used as both a stand mixer and food processor (or even a dough whisk), this machine is suitable for home use or professional use (like specialty bakeries). It will not rust or break after years of heavy use.

The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer is a GREAT machine and I recommend it to anyone who wants to make high quality baking results.

KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer Customer Reviews: Real People, Real Results!

Here’s what customers have had to say about the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer (honestly, who doesn’t like hearing from real people?).

I have been making everything from scratch for a while so the Kitchenaid is such a help. I use all the attachments on it, it’s great at mixing all my bread and pastries. I love the fact that all the attachments are metal. I’ve learned a few things over my baking years, but this machine is so easy to use I find myself not needing them anymore.

I have been using a tilt head mixer for several years now. This is by far one of the best purchases I have made in my life. I use it almost everyday making everything from bread to cake batters, even cheesecakes. Originally, I was looking at Kitchenaid stand mixers when I stumbled onto this tilt head model and haven’t looked back since! I would highly recommend this product!

This is the best stand mixer on the market that you can buy. I make my dough in less than 5 minutes and clean up seems as easy as it is. It is so easy to use, with the long beater for mixing and short for kneading. I am glad I purchased this machine because it makes baking fun again! Never could have been able to do it without this monster!

This machine is one of the best I have ever used. It is so powerful that you can get a lot done in a hurry. This mixer gets everything mixed fast and the bowl comes out tight without having to clean it after each mix. I use all the attachments and can tell that with regular use it will last for years.

This is a very powerful machine. It ensures quality results by getting everything done fast. The bowl holds a lot of food, but it is a bit hard to clean because the blade is oblong and it gets dried out after each use, otherwise I would give it 5 stars.

I am an avid cook and baker and I was given this mixer for Christmas about 5 years ago! This is an excellent machine! It can handle anything you throw at it from brownies to pizza dough to cake batter & cookie dough. I use it all the time and it just keeps going. I love this machine so much!

I absolutely love this mixer. I have a nice stand mixer, but my husband needed a new one since his old one was falling apart. He really wanted the tilt head, but his budget wouldn’t allow for it. I shopped around and found that this stand mixer was probably one of the most affordable tilt head models out there.

How does KitchenAid bowl lift work?

The KitchenAid bowl lift is excellent. My grandmother has one and it is still going strong after many years of use. My old KitchenAid’s bowl lift design (if you can call it that!) was a nightmare. When I made a batch of cookies, the butter/sugar mixture would just sit on top of my ingredients in the bowl like an oil slick in the pan! The new design prevents this from happening by lifting the ingredients up and back into the center, forcing everything to be mixed together evenly. This mixing motion produces higher quality results than a standard mixer (which only rotates).

How do you clean a KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer?

This is an excellent question, because if a mixer is not well maintained, parts can rust or wear out after many years of use. With the tilt head, there is a front and back that you have to clean. I recommend using non-abrasive sponges or cleaning wipes like Magic Erasers.

How do you change a KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer blade?

The blade on this mixer is made of metal and can rust if you’re not careful. To change the blade, you have to loosen the bolts on either side of the bowl and remove the blade by rotating it counter-clockwise.

What is the big advantage of using the stand mixer?

I’m used to doing everything by hand, but the stand mixer is great for mixing longer recipes. You can do multiple types of mixing: whisking, kneading, and mixing. The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer has a tilt head design so you don’t have to lift heavy bowls full of ingredients.

What are some uses for the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer?

Besides baking breads, pancakes, muffins and other baked goods (which is what this machine was designed for), this machine is great at making meatloaf and mashed potatoes/gravy because they use a lot of liquid which needs to be constantly mixed.

How long will the KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer last?

I’ve had my old stand mixer for over 10 years and it still works great (my grandmother had hers for over 25 years!). This mixer should last even longer since it is made with higher quality materials. Other Names For The KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer: The pro mixer, the heavy duty machine, the workhorse, the no-frills mixer.

Where can I buy a good stand mixer?

You can purchase this excellent KitchenAid Artisan Tilt-Head Stand Mixer from a local store or online. I personally have had the best luck with Amazon, although I have also bought from Costco and Kohl’s (the latter two are really popular places that you can pick up the mixer at).
