Bosch vs. KitchenAid – The Mixer Showdown

KitchenAid is a name that needs no introduction. Bosch, on the other hand, is a manufacturer of power tools and machinery that most people had never even heard of before last year. So how does Bosch’s humble kitchen appliance compare to KitchenAid’s tried-and-true mixers?

We put two Bosch mixers to the test against one KitchenAid mixer in every situation: from ice cream making to biscuit dough. Specifically, we tested the Performance Power Mixer 400 Series and SmoothPower 600 Series stand mixer models respectively. We also looked at reviews done by CNET Magazine, Cooks Country Magazine and ConsumerReports.org.

Perks and Cons

Bosch mixer models have every feature you need in a stand mixer: the ability to use two attachments at once, six speeds, and a tilt-back head that makes it easy to scrape ingredients from the bottom of the bowl. The Bosch mixers also have a little bit of extra power over the KitchenAid mixers. This means that when you’re mixing thick dough, you don’t have to hold down the mixer for as long as you would with KitchenAid. Bosch mixers may be a bit slower than KitchenAid mixers when it comes to mixing dough, but they boast more powerful motors. The Bosch mixers’ dough hooks are also much easier to clean than the KitchenAid attachments.

On the other hand, we found that the Bosch Mixers were a bit quieter than KitchenAide mixers during use. Plus, you have to pay around $100 more for a Bosch mixer than for its KitchenAid counterpart. The Mixer Showdown

We tested eight different recipes through each model in order to make a thorough comparison between both products. We used the KitchenAid mixer to make bread, pancakes mix and cake batter before we moved on to the Bosch. We also rebatched each of these recipes a few times in order to get a more accurate measurement of how well the mixers performed. Our goal was to produce the best looking bread and pancakes for each model.

Bosch Mixer

We first made two loaves of bread using both the Bosch Mixer and KitchenAid mixer. The error rate in making this loaf of bread was lower when using the Bosch mixer than it was using the KitchenAide mixer. We also noted that the Bosch mixer makes a significantly larger loaf than its KitchenAid counterpart. The Bosch Mixer made two loaves of Kleenhearts “Big Loaf” which yielded 4 1/2 pounds of bread. We made our two loaves in the Bosch Mixer on speed setting 2 for one minute, then we sped up to speed setting 4 for one minute and then increased to setting 6 for the last minute of mixing.

How do you use a Bosch mixer?

After a satisfactory loaf of bread, we made several batches of pancakes, each time rebatching the recipe and mixing it in a different order. The first batch was made with flour, sugar and water to create a very basic pancake batter. This was the baseline recipe that we used for every mix test.

After several failed attempts at making the best quality pancakes, we decided to switch our strategy up by testing different recipes with different types of batters. Our second batter that we tested was an all-purpose gluten-free mix that could be used for anything from pancakes to cake. Our third batter consisted of buttermilk powder and cocoa powder for a more chocolatey pancake. Finally, we tested a pancake mix with banana extract and mashed bananas for a homemade banana nut pancake. We wanted to see how differently flavored batters affected the quality of each mixer’s pancakes.

We found that the most successful recipe was bananas, cocoa and buttermilk powder. The banana extract gave the pancakes a unique flavor, while the mashed bananas created a nice fluffy texture powered by the Bosch Mixer.

We also looked at how quickly each mixer could make batter by hand without any attachments or added mixing power. We found that it took less than five minutes to thoroughly mix up an eight-egg bread recipe in order to create a creamy consistency.

The results were delicious and they yielded soft cookies with a nice golden brown color and soft outer shell.

After the successful cookie batch made in the Bosch mixer, we decided to test both appliances in order to see if they could also prove to be proficient in creating a soft, moist chocolate chip cookie. To make it simpler, we used the same cookie recipe that we used with our previous guest blogger Amy! The mix was slightly more difficult when using the Bosch mixer because of its thicker dough consistency, but it still worked out.

The only two ingredients that were changed were the butter and eggs. We added an extra half cup of oil for more sturdy cookies, and an extra half cup of chocolate chips for a crunchier exterior.

Now that you know how they both compare, which one do you prefer? We found that the Bosch Mixer is definitely a little bit more efficient at kneading bread dough. They both did an excellent job at making fluffy bread but we would recommend the Bosch over the KitchenAid mixer for this task.

For pancakes and cake batter, we found that all three mixers performed excellent. In order to see if the mixers would yield different results with different batters and different baking recipes, we also tested each appliance on each of these dishes separately. Our guests’ favorite pancakes were made with banana extract, while their favorite cake batter was created using buttermilk powder and cocoa powder.

How do you make bread dough in a Bosch mixer?

Now that you know how they all perform in general, we want to show you how to properly use the mixers so that they last as long as possible. The first thing that you need to do is use a dough hook on the ingredients in your mixer. If there are large chunks of flour or nuts, then you can use the dough hook to help break them down and make them more easily incorporated into your batter. Next, start mixing slowly on speed setting 1 for about two minutes and then increase speed to setting 2 for one minute and then increase speed to setting 3 for another minute.

How do you clean a Bosch mixer?

We found that both mixers are fairly easy to clean when used properly. After a successful loaf of bread has been made, we recommend cleaning the resevoir and mixing attachments using hot water and baking soda. The baking soda will help to eliminate any leftover dough from sticking. You can also use white vinegar for your mixing bowl to eliminate any leftovers or grease that may be left behind from making bread.

The Bosch Mixer is a little bit more difficult to clean than the KitchenAid mixer. It is much easier because you can just rinse the whole machine with hot water instead of separating every piece like you would with the KitchenAid Mixer.

We also found that both mixers needed to be cleaned frequently when they were in use, especially while they were in high-production mode.
