Which KitchenAid Stand Mixer To Buy: An Easy Guide For Beginners

I have seen a lot of questions on my Facebook page asking which stand mixer to buy. So I decided to write this blog post so everyone can find the answer they are looking for easily.

First you must decide what type of mixer would suit your needs best. There are four types of KitchenAid stand mixers: KSM150PSS, KSM150PSW, KSM155OBWW and KSM155OBBX.

The first thing you need to do is decide how many bowls it will hold and how big those bowls are (bowl size). That is how you can determine how big a mixer will be for you.

Set your budget

All stand mixers from KitchenAid are great, so do not worry if you want to cut some corners by buying a “cheaper” standing mixer. However, remember that all stand mixers from KitchenAid are not the same price and some of them might be out of your budget.

KSM150PSS: This is the smallest, classic standing mixer from KitchenAid. This classic version does not have any computerized functions (it is simply ON/OFF). It comes in white and holds 2 bowls (1 large and 1 small.) The size of the large bowl is 6.5L and the small one is 2.5L.

The size of the large bowl is 6.5L and the small one is 2.5L. KSM150PSW: This mixer has all basic functions that you would want to see in a kitchen appliance like this including Pulse, Speed control, ON/OFF with auto shut-off function, etc… It comes in either red or white and holds 3 bowls – 1 large bowl (6.5L), 1 medium bowl (5L) and 1 small bowl (2.5L).

KSM155OBWW: This is the most powerful standing mixer that comes in black.

It has all classic functions like the KSM150PSW plus 5 additional ones like Quick Pulses, Automatic Cool Down, Automatic Standby and Automatic Dough Hooks. It also has the new EXTRA-LARGE bowl (7.5L) to fit all the extra ingredients that you might need to make delicious recipes.

The large bowl is made of stainless steel and is perfect for making sauces, dough and other types of batter as well as “extra-large” cakes and large pieces of bread. This model has a motor capacity of 3HP, a feed tube size of 1.2m/40″ and 3 RINSERS. It holds 3 bowls but 2 large and 1 small bowl and comes in black only.

Speed control with 30 speeds plus 8 more speeds that make it possible to make milkshakes, soufflés and other recipes with the Speed Control. It has 6 programmable memory slots that can store up to 18 different foods (batter and dough recipes). The machine has 1 large bowl (7.5L), 1 medium bowl (5L) and 1 small bowl (2.5L) and comes in black only.

There is also a KSM155OBWX that holds 3 bowls but 2 large and 1 small bowl and comes in black only.

The price difference? The KSM150PSS will be about $250 cheaper than the KSM150PSW. The KSM150PSW will be about $300 cheaper than the KSM155OBWW and the KSM155OBBX will be about $450 more expensive than the KSM155OBWW.

I recommend that you choose the size/price of your stand mixer based on how many people are going to use it. So if you have a small family than the KSM150PSS will be great and if you are cooking for more people than go with the KSM150PSW.

Now that you know what KitchenAid stand mixer to buy all that is left is to choose the color. Here are the colors of the mixers:

White: KSM150PSS, KSM150PSW, KSM155OBWW, KSM155OBBX Black: KSM155OBWW Red: KSM150PSW and sometimes KSM155OBBX

These are all of the KitchenAid stand mixers. There is also a Professional 600 but it is made for restaurants to make dough and other big items like that. I would not recommend this mixer for a home kitchen unless you plan to open a restaurant at home. This mixer is about $4000 and it does not come with bowls either. It comes in silver only.

It is important to know what bowl size you will need for your stand mixer so that you also know how much space that bowl takes up.

Standard Bowl: This is the most common type of bowl and usually comes in these sizes:

Large: about 6.5L, 3/4″ walls. Medium: about 5L, 3/4″ walls. Small: about 2.5L, 1/2″ walls.

There are also 9-cup and 12-cup bowls out there which are only sold in “specialty” stores (I just ordered one on Amazon.) The 10-cup is 7.5L while the 12-cup is 9L.

Lefties and Righties

I am also going to tell you now about lefties and righties. Lefties are people who are right-handed and cannot use a standard bowl for mixing. They will need to use left-handed bowls. Rightists are those who can mix with a standard bowl but much prefer mixing with the bowl on the left side of the machine. They need to use the bowls that are on their left side (unless they want their bowls at an odd angle.) There is also something called “reverse” mixing ratios that have a 1:2 ratio for rightists and 1:1.5 ratio for leftists.

Now that you know all of these things, you can go to the store and find the one that is right for you and your family’s needs. Remember to get a bowl that fits the size of your stand mixer. If you do not know what this is, check out my article on how to measure a bowl and see if it fits your stand mixer!

What should I look for when buying a KitchenAid mixer?

When you are looking for a new stand mixer, like I just told you to do on my site, there are a few things that you should look for to help make it easier for you to make the best decision.

1. What Features Does It Have?

There are very specific dimensions of each bowl and each “cup” size. If your bowl is too big or too small, your food will not come out right. You want to be sure that the bowls and other pieces fit the size of your stand mixer but they also need to fit in more than one place in your kitchen so that they can be stored in a certain place at all times.

All stand mixers will hold the standard 1.5-4L bowls, the 9-10 cups and the 5-6 quart bowls. The other two sizes will be a little harder to find but if you look hard enough, you’ll be able to find them. Some stores have a ceiling of where you can put your mixer and some do not so keep that in mind when looking!

The attachments are also important things to consider when looking at different stand mixers. The attachments are what make a stand mixer different than a stand mixer without the attachments so this is always important to consider. Some of the things that you would want to look for include:

Spiral Slicers: Spiral Slicer Attachment – This is one of the most expensive attachments and is good for making pie crusts, cakes, cookies and other items like that.

Citrus Press Attachment: Citrus Press Attachment – This is made for juicing lemons, limes and oranges but works great on other fruit as well. It also works well for other hard fruits and vegetables like bananas. It makes leafy greens easier to shred as well with this attachment.

Cake Pans: Cake Pans – This is a very popular attachment for cooking cakes. It allows you to fill the pan with batter and then run it down through the stand mixer when it is at speed and it will result in a perfect cake that has a smooth texture and is not too thick or too thin. You can also make layer cakes easily with this as well.

Food Grinder Attachment: Food Grinder Attachment – This will work wonders on meat to make sausage and burgers, cheese, pastries and much more! There are other attachments that can do the same things so you may consider another attachment but this one is popular due to its heavy-duty performance.

2. What Drawers Does It Have?

Stand mixers come in different sizes and you want to be sure that the one that you choose has the drawers that are right for your needs. Some mixers will have just one drawer while some will have two and some even have three drawers for storage. You should also consider how large the drawers are so you can have enough space to store your accessories in it. Normally, this is a “measurements” size so keep that in mind when looking at the size of the mixer so that it fits in your cabinets! This is important because look at what I said earlier about having a big or small bowl to make sure that they will fit you kitchen as well.

3. What Is It Made Of?

Stand mixers are usually made from stainless steel or glass. Glass is a hard material but it does not scratch as easily as stainless steel. Sometimes you can find some that are made from a hard plastic but you should do your research on it before purchasing it because they might be of a low quality and break easily. I strongly suggest that you go with stainless steel or glass if possible because they will last longer and will be easier to keep clean and looking nice for you so that you can store them without having to hide them under your cabinets. Stainless is also more resistant to salt water, rust and etching because of the acidity levels in your food!

4. What Price Are They?

Stand mixers can range in price greatly. I would strongly suggest to start out with the cheapest one so that you can get used to using it and then later if you really like it, get a more expensive one. These are not cheap and they are a very big investment so if you find that it is not what you really wanted, at least you didn’t pay a lot of money for it! There are also some stand mixers that come with attachments and other items that add up to more than the actual mixer itself so keep this in mind when looking as well!

Which KitchenAid is best for home use?

There are many different types of KitchenAid stand mixers and there is really not a “best” one for home use. You want to choose the one that fits your needs to make sure that it is the best one for you! If you are in need of a stand mixer that has a lot of storage with different sizes, I would suggest the KitchenAid 5-quart Artisan Series mixer with the three bowls. This is a heavy duty machine that does not skip in any aspects. It has very easy attachments, it stores well and works great for all kinds of mixing jobs!

If you just have basic mixing needs, then I would suggest the KitchenAid 3.5-quart Artisan mixer. I feel like this one offers everything that you need and not anything more than you need. It’s a good basic mixer and it also has a good storage size with the bowl, hooks and other accessories as well! If you are on a budget or just getting started, I would suggest the KitchenAid 3-quart Stand Mixer with pouring shield.

What’s the difference between the KitchenAid classic and artisan?

The only real difference between the classic and the artisan is that the artisan has a glass bowl and does not have the oil groove like the classic. The only other difference is that it has some extra accessories for storage. Other than this, they are virtually the same! Both are beautiful looking and work perfectly well with no issues at all!

What is the most common KitchenAid mixer?

The most common color for a KitchenAid stand mixer is white. The classic and artisan both come in white and the only difference between the two is that the artisan has a glass bowl while the classic has a metal bowl.

Are they easy to clean?

Yes! They are easy to clean and take little to no time at all! You can soak them in hot water with soap or use a disinfectant spray if you want to get rid of any germs that may be on it as well. I do not recommend putting them in the dish washer because they will rust faster than it would take you to just wash it by hand.

CONCLUSION:

It is always nice to have a stand mixer in the kitchen because it saves you time and helps with your health! I hope that this book was able to help with your needs and will do great things for you and your kitchen! The next step is to go out there and buy your new stand mixer! I am sure that it will be one of the best investments that you have ever made as well as something that you enjoy having in the kitchen.
