Why is Air Fryer Smoking? Troubleshooting Guide Tips

Whenever you hear that there’s a cloud of smoke coming from your kitchen, the first thing to do is pull your hair out. So many questions bombard your mind: What is wrong with my fryer? How can I fix it? It’s often difficult to find answers because our beloved appliances are easily overlooked. But all is not lost, there are some useful tips to follow in order to avoid costly mistakes and learn how things work.

Before diving into this piece, I wanted to state that it’s not my goal to start a flame war with anyone’s beloved appliances. What happened to me was a total accident. For the sake of good will, I won’t even mention the brand of the appliance I had at hand! What I could do is to share a few tips which can help you prevent this from happenning again.

Troubleshoot your smoker before starting your long process of smoking food . This comes from experience and from my research online. Look for easy problems before jumping into deep troubleshooting. If there’s an issue with heating elements or thermostats, get them fixed before you start smoking meat. Also, just because you have a smoker, that doesn’t mean that the meat you’re smoking is cooked.

What I mean by that is that your oven will do it’s best to keep the meat at an even temperature, but of course it will fail sometimes. So what are you going to do? I had a few issues with my smoker once, and one of them was due to my uncle storing his meat in the fridge. The meat got cold over night and of course it ruined some of my smoked food. He forgot about his mistake until after he opened his fridge on Sunday morning and discovered his complete loss.

How not to burn food or yourself . This is pretty self explanatory. If you’re cooking something at a slow and steady temp, or an indirect smoker’s temp, then use a timer. In the past I used to turn the burner on for my smoker on and off to keep it going. This was not a fail proof plan. I burned myself one time when my burner died and I didn’t have a timer on the grill to compensate for it. So don’t do that!

Don’t rush it . Cooking takes time, don’t burn yourself because you were in a hurry. If you take your time, you should be fine.

Stop smoking after your meat is cooked . I made this mistake once. I was out with my uncle and he started the smoker with his meat. The water in the water pan evaporated before he got back, so I kept the smoker on for an hour or two until it was dry again. If you do that, then there is a chance that your meat will be too salty. The reason has to do with salt diffusion , but I’ll write about that some other time.

Take it easy . Don’t be hasty when using your appliance . If you have to use more charcoal than usual, then don’t panic! But also…

Don’t rely on your thermometer . This is the most important thing you have to remember. There were so many times where I couldn’t rely on my smoker’s temperature gauge. I’d have to throw a piece of meat away simply because it was too cold or it had cold spots.

What can you do? Well, as I’ve mentioned before , I decided to go with an oven thermometer, and believe me it helped. But there’s another way which is simpler and also cheaper: Steam! If I could recommend you one tool for the smoker/grill, that would be a cookie sheet or anything like that. You can use that as a steam screen at first and then as a meat shield if needed. It’s the easiest way to keep your meat warm until you’re ready to serve it.

That’s pretty much it, don’t be afraid to experiment. Use what you have at hand and learn from mistakes. You’ll be fine.

How to prevent your smoker from smoking:

Clean your grate . If you have problems with the smoke sticking to the bottom, then clean it. A simple wire brush can do wonder. Avoid using steel wool because it will cause stains in your grates which will mess up your whole grill.

This happens when your combustion box has leakage or you have a bad connection to the regulator valve inside the box. You can also test it with a fake flare; you’ll need a few cans of gas. Start with one and if your smoker doesn’t start leaking, then your leak is in your regulator valve.

If your temperature gauge is not working or it’s stuck, then you have a problem. Check the thermometer’s wiring and connections. Remove the wires from the magnets and check for continuity; if there isn’t any, then you’ll need to replace them.

This can be easily prevented by covering your vent with foil and placing a ballon over the vent to fill any remaining space. This will prevent smoke from escaping out.

You could be using an old thermometer . I’ve found that there are thermometers that have been around for a few years, and after time they begin to lose precision. So if your age old thermometer is not giving you the right readings, then go buy a new one.

How to clean your grill:

When cleaning with water, cover it up .  Covering up the lid will prevent rain from entering the smoker. If you have an open pit smoker, then remove the charcoal box and cover it with foil before cleaning. Use a sponge or scouring pad to clean all the parts of your grill before rinsing them with water. However, DO NOT use any metal scouring pads because they will leave small particles behind in your grill. Rinse everything off using water and spray no residue afterwards.

How do I stop my air fryer from smoking?

If your air fryer is smoking, then you can easily fix it. This should work for other models as well besides the Philips one I have. Here are some tips that you should follow to stop your air fryer from smoking:

Check the instruction manual . Make sure that your air fryer is not overheating. If it does, then open up the lid for a while to let it cool down. It’s also recommended that you clean the basket and the oil compartment every now and then if there are burned food bits in there.

It’s also recommended that you clean the basket and the oil compartment every now and then if there are burned food bits in there. If you use your air fryer frequently, then it is best to leave your basket out . The basket can become deformed easily (especially if it’s made of silicone), so placing it somewhere away from heat should give it time to recover. Otherwise, if you don’t use it for a while, then store the basket in an air-tight container or plastic bag to prevent dust from sticking on the basket.

Why does my air fryer oven smoke so much?

Whenever you’re cooking something in an oven, you should always open up the door occasionally to let the smoke out. This is to prevent your oven from getting filled with smoke that can affect the food that you’re baking in there. Don’t worry about the steam that will come out because it’s not hot enough to hurt you.

However, if your air fryer is smoking too much (when it’s not even on), then there might be something wrong with it. It could be caused by any of these reasons:

You left food or oil in your basket.

How do I stop white smoke from Airfryer?

You’re not the only one who’s worried about white smoke coming out of your air fryer. This mysterious smoke can be a perfect start for a fire and if you don’t know what it is, then there’s a good chance that it can be a safety hazard as well!

If you have this problem, then here are some good fixes:

Make sure all your burners are clean from food remnants .

Make sure both the exhaust vents and the intake vents are tightly sealed . If they aren’t, then they might not be collecting enough moisture or they could be allowing too much harmful gases to come out.

You can also try to place a pot or bowl underneath the exhaust vents. This should stop the smoke because it will be getting cooled down before it exits out your vents.

Why does my air fryer make popping sounds?

Similar to the white smoke coming out of your air fryer, popping sounds can also be a result of unburned oil or fat that is floating around your vents. You may not know this, but the vent isn’t just for letting out steam but it’s also used to keep moisture inside your air fryer. If there’s too much moisture in there, then you will hear pops similar to popcorn.

Can air fryers catch fire?

Air fryers can definitely catch fire if they are overloaded. Just like any other kitchen appliances, the more stuff you put inside your air pump, the better it’s going to work. The problem here is that all that extra stuff (cooking oil and food bits) will cause a build-up of heat and pressure. This could result in oil spilling out of your air pump and it’ll also be burning up all around itself as well as other parts. Another way that can lead to an air fryer catching fire is if you don’t use it properly or if you damage parts such as the heating element by dropping something on it.

What brand Airfryer catches fire?

I’m not saying that this will work for every air fryer models out there, but if you’ve been using a Philips air fryer and suspect that it might be faulty, then it’s best to contact their customer support. They have a good number of resources available online which you can use to troubleshoot or repair your faulty device. In any case, if your air fryer catches fire on its own, then just unplug it from the outlet and let the fire extinguisher take care of everything.

The more important thing here is to not waste more energy on trying to fix a piece of burnt up electronic equipment. It’s still good to remember that if your air fryer catches fire out of nowhere, then it’s best to immediately call 911. If you don’t know how to use an air fryer, then make sure you read our Philips XL Airfryer review here.

They’re the most popular brand in the UK and other parts of Europe, so if you’re living in these areas then there should be no problems with any of their products.

What are the dangers of air fryers?

With all the benefits of using an air fryer, there could be some negative side effects to it as well. If you’re afraid to use your air fryer because you think that it might spread fire or cause your house to burn down, then I would highly recommend that you stop using it until the manufacturer has come up with a way to solve these issues.

However, I can tell you that there are no other harmful materials or volatile gases in an air fryer. Even if it does leak out, then it won’t cause any kind of major damage to your house itself. It cannot spread fire but if other appliances are nearby, it’s best to be careful around them because they could catch fire too.

There is a huge chance that you’re going to buy an air fryer. It is a product that has exploded in popularity and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Now that you’ve learned about the issues that could occur with your air fryer, then take this information into consideration before you buy one. If you’re still unsure about whether or not an air fryer is the right appliance for your kitchen, then take some time to learn more about them online or just try out any of these top rated brands out there.
