KitchenAid mixers are notoriously expensive, but their advertising campaigns have spawned a loyal following. So today we’re taking a closer look at the KitchenAid mixer to see if it’s worth shelling out for the pricier models.
We tend to be pretty tough on products here at Gadget Reviewer, so we’ll tell you all about what we liked and didn’t like about this model in detail, as well as what you should consider when looking for a mixer. In addition to examining KitchenAid’s claim that their mixers are heavy duty, we’ll also show you some of the more affordable alternatives which may suit your needs better than an expensive model.
We’ll start off by taking a look at each of the major features of these mixers, and then finish off with our thoughts on the whole product and other brands to consider.
Our Review of the KitchenAid Mixer
The first thing we noticed about this mixer was that it wasn’t as heavy as we’d expected for its size. We thought it would be much heavier than something like a Cuisinart or Hamilton Beach model, but in fact it weighs 39 pounds compared to those models’ 14 pounds each. As a result, it’s not so good for big jobs like bread dough or cake batter, where you’d need a mixer that could handle being on the countertop while kneading and mixing.
Where the KitchenAid does shine is in the attachments. The 7-piece accessory set includes a beater, wire whip, dough hook, 2 flat beater blades and an extra bowl.
The bowl locks onto the mixer so that you don’t have to worry about it falling off during use and breaking. The downside of this is that it’s really difficult to get off once you start using it, which can be annoying if you want to take a break.
The flat beater was our favorite attachment for mixing together ingredients, but for dough the dough hook was our preferred choice over the wire whip.
The issue comes from the wire whip. It can only spin in one direction, which means that it’s not very efficient at giving you a smooth result for anything you want to mix in it. You need to use both hands to turn the beater, or else there’s no way for the wire to catch up and catch on your ingredients.
Final Thoughts: This is a good mixer if you’re doing smaller tasks like making bread dough and batter, but if you do a lot of mixing from scratch keep looking. If you’re happy using the attachments on your current mixer, then this may be a good choice for you – otherwise we would highly recommend checking out one of our other higher-rated models before buying this one.

Cheaper Mixer Alternatives to Consider
The first thing to consider is whether you use your mixer often enough to warrant dropping hundreds of dollars on something. If you use it for a few times a year and are satisfied with crumbs in the bottom of your cake pan, you might be better off looking for an inexpensive model instead.
If the answer is yes, the next step is to decide whether you prefer the brand name or if you’d be willing to try something else.
The Cuisinart model we reviewed is a good example of an affordable mixer that performs just as well as the KitchenAid. It’s not as big, but it also isn’t any harder to handle than the KitchenAid (at least in terms of what it can hold). It comes with a 7-piece accessory set and a storage case. The storage case isn’t as nice as KitchenAid’s, but for most people it will be enough to keep everything together without taking up much space in your kitchen.
The Cuisinart also has a fair amount of attachments so you can use it for a wide variety of tasks, including making bread dough. On the downside, the wire whip and flat beater slip a bit while spinning, so they aren’t as efficient at mixing things like batters or bread dough. For these tasks we’d recommend an inexpensive model like the KitchenAid and not spend extra money on attachments if you know you won’t use them. The final thing to think about is whether all the features on this mixer are necessary to make it worth buying.
People are generally under the impression that kitchenaid is a very durable and heavy duty product, but in my opinion, it is not. I’ve had it for about 5 or 6 years now and the bowl has already chipped. This was an expensive mistake because I paid over $300 for this mixer.
Just recently, I have noticed that it is making a clicking noise during my mixing sessions. Turns out the motor was dying.
This is extremely frustrating because I really expected to use for many years to come (the lifetime warranty was one of the reasons why I bought this product). So, the moral of the story is: If you want a kitchenaid mixer, go for one of the less expensive models or buy something else altogether. This just shows that they don’t last especially if you use it a lot like me.
After five years of use, I noticed that the bowl started to chip from its base; sauce would seep into these cracks occasionally while mixing doughs. It wasn’t as if this was a rare occurrence either- at least one out of every three times I used it would result in some kind of food spilling out onto my countertop or table because of this flaw in its design.
I suppose it could be considered my fault for not noticing it sooner seeing as I’m the one who used it, but by the same token, I don’t know how this happened. It still works well otherwise, and when its running there isn’t any problem with performance or anything like that. My problem is with the bowl itself; why would a manufacturer make a bowl that clearly is going to crack and chip so easily in such a short amount of time?
Instead of trying to replace my bowl or otherwise get it fixed, I decided to buy a stainless steel mixing bowl and washer set (both from Amazon) so that I can at least get rid of this problem once and for all. I’m not sure if my experience is unique, but I personally wouldn’t buy this mixer again knowing the problems that I’ve had with it.

My intention is to make this a one time purchase and never have these issues again considering some other people I’ve talked to have also had similar problems with their kitchenaid mixers. Kitchenaid’s quality control has really gone down the drain, unless there was another cause as to why my bowl chipped in the first place. For instance, if I were to drop it or something like that, then maybe that would be my fault; but given the fact that food would seep into cracks in its base during mixing operations makes me think otherwise.
I contacted kitchenaid directly about this problem and they said they wouldn’t replace it for free unless it was damaged during shipping or something like that. Since it was purchased before the warrantee expired, I had to pay the $75 for the bowl. This kind of sucks considering its such a big bowl and it costs close to $100 just for a new one. I got shafted really because that’s not what I consider heavy duty at all, so Kitchenaid should have done something in my opinion.
After looking around on the internet, there were lots of other people who also had similar problems with their kitchenaid mixer as well. I’m guessing that either they didn’t notice their bowl chipping right away or they thought it was simply “old age” which is why they never thought about replacing their bowls or buying new ones. This is definitely a case of “you get what you pay for”.
What is the difference between artisan and heavy-duty KitchenAid?
In the KitchenAid line, there are three different types of mixers: Professional, Artisan, and Heavy-Duty. The difference between each is merely a matter of material and assembly. The professional line has metal components while the artisan and heavy-duty lines use plastic.
Professional model: This model consists of the stainless steel body that holds the bowl, paddle shafts (or beaters), motor base and gears, beater shafts (or paddles), drive shafts for the gears and beater shafts on either side. The professional models also have a metal tri-lobe mixing action with two mixing paddles at each end for more mixing power than other models. Professional models are available in three different color options, including stainless steel, gold, and red.
Artisan model: This model consists of the bowl and motor base. The gears and beater shafts are made from a lightweight plastic called thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), which is also used for the beater tips. Other difference from the professional line is that there are 5 speeds instead of 6. Available in white or silver finish (a red finish is also available for some models). Being lighter than professional models makes this model easier to move from counter to storage. With the plastic gear and beater shaft, this model is cheaper to produce than the professional models.
Heavy-Duty model: This model consists of the bowl, motor base and a metal drive shaft for the beater shafts.
Is it possible to remove stains from my kitchen aid mixer?
Yes, it is possible to remove stains from your KitchenAid mixer. Each one of us has stained at least one mixing bowl during our cooking adventures. Usually the stains are caused by food spills or splashes of water. The easiest way to remove stains from a KitchenAid mixer is to use a dishwasher. If you don’t have one, you can use the following method:
Place the stained bowl in a microwave-safe container and cover it with water. Put it in the microwave for 2 minutes. After removing it from the microwave take it out of the microwave carefully and allow it to cool for about 20 minutes or until you can safely touch it with your hands (if not hot). Before cleaning, remove all traces of food using a scratchy sponge. Put some baking soda into a bowl and add warm water until you get a thick paste-like consistency.
Is KitchenAid discontinuing the Artisan series?
KitchenAid is currently cancelling the Artisan series of mixers in the very near future, but is still working on a new purchase. However, we have all been worried about KitchenAid changing their mind, if this happens it will be so much better for us as consumers because we will be getting a more efficient and powerful mixer that does not have any chipping issues. The Artisan series was designed for high-quality performance with durability and long life. We are currently working hard to market the new mixer and bring it to the public so that everyone can enjoy a good quality mixer without any chipping issues.
What is the difference between the KitchenAid models?
Professional model: The Professional series comes in three color options, including stainless steel, gold and red. It has a 6 speed design and a durable stainless steel exterior which will last through many years of heavy use. Does not have the chipping issues that the Artisan series has had in the past.
Artisan model: The Artisan models come in three color options, including white and silver. They are 60% lighter than the professional series making them easy to carry around when moving from counter to storage. Its gears and beater shafts are made with TPE, which is also used for the beater tips on its beaters.
Heavy-Duty model: The Heavy Duty models come in one solid color, including white. They also have a rubber drive belt for the beater shafts instead of the nylon belt on other models.
What is a Cuisinart and why would I buy one instead of a KitchenAid?
A Cuisinart mixer is essentially the same as the KitchenAid mixer, but it has both professional and artisan features, which means that you will be able to do more with this mixer than you can with a KitchenAid model. You can use it to bake bread, make pizza dough and much more. Also, Cuisinart comes in black or white finishes while KitchenAid comes in three different colors only.
