Bowl-lift Versus Tilt-Head Stand Mixers

Mixing dough for cookies, cakes, and bread can be an arduous task without a stand mixer to do the hard work. While you might think that any old stand mixer would do the trick, if you want your cooking to go smoothly and efficiently (not to mention with better results), it’s worth investing in a quality model.

The main difference between tilt-head and bowl-lift stand mixers is that the latter includes something called a planetary or bottom rotating whisk attachment which captures more of the ingredients than a traditional whip. This is important because it means that less flour or butter will get stuck inside the bottom of your bowl while mixing.

What makes a bowl-lift stand mixer so great is that it makes baking quick, easy and painless. Besides being able to easily mix ingredients, these stand mixers can also be used for other kitchen tasks like grinding meat and kneading bread. In addition to the traditional beater attachments, there are also types of attachments that can grate cheese, smash cookies, whip cream and even chop vegetables.

With all of these functions in one convenient machine, a good stand mixer is an indispensable tool for any serious cook.

Of course, one machine does not make a good meal. The main advantage of a bowl-lift stand mixer is that it’s more efficient at mixing dense ingredients like bread dough and cookie batter. This is because the secondary beaters (the ones attached on the bottom of the mill) have more power.

In addition to being able to mix more ingredients in less time, bowl-lift stand mixers are also lighter and easier to store than tilt-head models. Although both types of machines are equally powerful, bowl-lift models come with attachments for whatever type of mixing you may want to do most often.

You’ll also save money by opting for a bowl-lift stand mixer because the attachments and accessories cost less than their tilt-head cousins:

Attachments – KitchenAid’s Professional 600 Series mixers come with over 15 attachments ensuring you can choose the one that best suits your needs. In addition to the beater, dough hook and paddle attachments, these mixers come with accessories like a pasta maker, salad sever and vegetable chopper. Many also include a whisk attachment that’s perfect for kneading bread dough.

dough hook – in cheap models this accessory is usually given away with the mixer itself but you’ll pay extra if you want to add one. The dough hook attachment is used to knead bread dough, desserts and cookie batter or whisk ingredients together.

batter bowl – a large metal bowl that helps you make smaller batches without mixing over a single dough. This is useful for making small amounts of bread, cake and muffins. Sometimes known as a bread pan.

stand mixer parts – Different models of mixers come with varying number and types of accessories in order to suit your needs as a kitchen cook. However, some mixers come with more accessories than others which can make the initial cost seem higher than it really is.

Purchasing a new stand mixer is, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable and rewarding ways to spend money you’ve ever made. But with so many mixers to choose from, it can easily become overwhelming and this blog post aims to clear up any confusions around which type of mixer is right for you.

To start off, there are two main types of mixers that people typically buy: bowl-lift stand mixers or tilt-head stand mixers. Bowl-lift stands are the more popular choice and they have very similar features to tilt-head models but they cost quite a bit more because they require more parts that need to be replaced on a regular basis.

This article will primarily focus on bowl-lift models since I’ve personally used and owned five different models of them over the past eight years but the principles that apply to both types of mixers are the same so feel free to skip to the end of this article if you’d prefer.

In this article we’re going to look at:

Bowl-lifter vs tilt-head – What’s the difference? How do they work? Pros & Cons Comparison of features, specifications and reviews Market share & wide range available The best deals available.

Let’s get started.

Bowl-lifter vs tilt-head – What’s the difference? How do they work? Pros & Cons Comparison of features, specifications and reviews Market share & wide range available The best deals available.

How do they work? Bowl-lift Vs Tilt-head mixers – The Differences between bowl-lift and tilt-head stand mixers are quite unique.

A bowl lift mixer is very similar to a tilt-head mixer but there is one major difference: the bowl of a bowl lift stand mixer needs to be lifted in order to get it off the base whereas on tilt heads you simply tip the head back and slide it out. Bowl-lift mixers also have the ability to be put back into the base without lifting the bowl which is a common feature on tilt-head mixers.

Because of this, bowl-lift models are usually more expensive and most people prefer these models to tilt heads.

A great example of a bowl-lift stand mixer that I personally own is the Kitchenaid Artisan stand mixer as it’s one of the most versatile and efficient machines I’ve ever owned. It works well in almost every scenario I throw at it with minimal effort being required to switch it between pure mixing and kneading mode. The Kitchenaid Artisan is also extremely quiet which is a huge bonus for me when I’m trying to knead dough.

It’s important to note that bowl-lift models tend to be more expensive than their tilt-head counterparts so if you’re on a budget, then the tilt-head model might be the better option for you.

You may also be asking why it is these two types of mixers are popular at all?

Well, it can be quite confusing but It’s certainly not because people think they’re better than the other one. It’s not even a case of “one is better than the other” – they’re actually quite similar in most ways.

It’s simply because the way the models differ that has made them so popular. So without further adieu let’s take a look at each of the pros and cons for each type of mixer and then move onto comparing them against one another!

Which mixer is better tilt head or bowl-lift?

We’ve already established that bowl-lift stand mixers are more expensive but it doesn’t necessarily follow that they’re better than their tilt-head counterparts. A common misconception which needs to be cleared up is the fact that a bowl-lift stand mixer is not necessarily better than a tilt-head stand mixer and vice versa. Both types offer outstanding value for money, so it’s just a matter of deciding exactly what you’ll be using it for and make your decision from there. The main difference is that a bowl lift stand mixer requires you to lift the bowl before you can use it whereas on a tilt-head model, the bowl itself moves when you tilt the head back. This is one of the key factors in deciding which type of mixer is better for your needs.

Which stand up mixer is the best?

I personally own a KitchenAid Artisan 5KSM15CA mixers and I’ve had it for around eight years now. I do most of my baking in this mixer, kneading bread loaves, making cookie dough and all kinds of other things, such as cakes, pie crust and homemade pasta. But the reason why I chose this model was because it’s much more versatile than the average model because it can be used both as a pure stand mixer and also a tilt-head mixer but with only one adapter.

What are the top 3 stand mixers?

Not everyone can afford to spend $500 on a stand mixer but even if you could, odds are your kitchen won’t be big enough to hold it. Below I’ve put together a list of the three best priced mixers that most people will be able to afford (whether they’re looking at buying their first machine and the other two are replacements for them).

I recommend the Fagor Duo Plus 500 Stand Mixer as it’s by far one of the best quality stand mixers I’ve come across for under $200.

It comes with all the features that you’d expect from an expensive high-end model, except it’s only about half as expensive (because it has a much smaller bowl). The 4.5 Litre bowl moves up and down, so you can place it in a position to suit the recipe you’re mixing and then lift it out when the mixing is done. The motor is powerful enough for kneading as well as ordinary mixing but again, because of the compact size of this machine, it doesn’t require much space to store it away – only about 10 inches long. You can even use it as a hand mixer if you ever need to.

Another good model is the Cuisinart SM-55 5.5 quart stand mixer, this is one of the most versatile mixers I’ve ever used while making pasta, kneading bread and even whipping up meringues and macaroons. The bowl has an extra large capacity and the best part of this machine is that all of its attachments for every purpose fit on top of it, so it’s easy to store away and doesn’t take up too much space.

The third model I recommend is one from a brand called KitchenAid who have been producing some great stand mixers for over 80 years now. The Artisan 5KSM150PS is one of the newest models from them and the best part about it is that it comes with everything you need to mix and knead, so there are no extra accessories to buy. The mixer might be a little on the heavy side but that’s because of its high power which makes it even better at mixing dough.

What are the five best stand mixers?

In my opinion, the five best stand mixers are:

KitchenAid Artisan 5KSM150PS – This is the top of the list because of its unbelievable value for money. It’s one of the cheapest mixers you can find but it’s still incredibly powerful, it works great with all types of recipes and kneads dough better than most other kitchen appliances out there.

Cuisinart SM-55 5.5 quart stand mixer – This is one of the best priced models around, which makes it ideal for anyone on a budget. It has a huge bowl which means you can use it for bigger recipes and also fold in ingredients like icing sugar or flour with ease.

Fagor Duo Plus 500 – For the price of around $200 this is one of the best models you can get from the brand Fagor which is why it’s one of my top three mixers. It mixes hard ingredients with ease and has a great range of attachments for every possible use case. The downside to this model however is that it doesn’t come with an additional bowl so if you want to make large batches, you’ll have to buy another bowl separately.

KitchenAid Artisan 3KSM150PS – This machine costs about $350 but I consider it to be extremely good value for money because of its range of features and accessories which are included in the box. It’s a high-end model but it has the same type of bowl like the other KitchenAid mixer I’ve mentioned above and it is also very versatile.

KitchenAid Pro 600 – This is probably one of the most popular models that KitchenAid has ever produced, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of my top five. It comes with everything you need to make almost any kind of recipe imaginable, from cakes and cookies to pasta, ravioli and even bread! The only downside to this model is its price – about $500 which can be hard for some people to justify but if you’re serious about your food, it’s definitely worth it.

CONCLUSION:

I really love my KitchenAid Mixer and have had some great experiences with it. The only problem I have with this machine is that sometimes when I use it for kneading bread, the dough gets caught in between the cables of the motor, so I end up having to pull all the dough out before being able to finish mixing it. But that’s a small price to pay for what an amazing machine it is. So I hope this article has helped you make up your mind whether a stand mixer is what you need to make the kind of food you want to eat.
