KitchenAid Mixers: New Vs. Old

So you’re in the market for a new mixer, but have no idea which type to get. It’s totally understandable – there are so many different types of mixers that it can be tricky to know where to start. But don’t worry; we’re here with all of the info you need to help you decide!

KitchenAid mixers come in two varieties: classic and artisan. The two were created based on what was most popular during their respective eras, with the artisan series being much more modern than the classic line. So how do these two lines differ?

Let’s start by talking about the classic mixer. These were introduced in the 1920s and remained popular for around 50 years, with their popularity fading in the 70s. Classic KitchenAid mixers are still pretty common on flea markets and antique stores, but they’re not something you’ll see in most people’s homes anymore – virtually all of them have been updated to use a more modern model.

The classic series is a traditional stand mixer, found right beside your grandmother’s old stand mixer on those dusty flea market shelves. They’re a little less advanced than the artisan, but they do have their own qualities which make them worth considering.

As mentioned above, classic KitchenAid mixers are still extremely popular at flea markets, and some folks just don’t want to give up their stand mixer for any reason. That’s fine – we’re not going to try to tell you that you need an artisan KitchenAid mixer just because it’s new and shiny! But if you’re unsure about whether or not a stand mixer is what you want, we can help you decide.

Classic KitchenAid mixers come in both 4.5 quart bowls (for smaller batches) and 6 quart bowls (good for most average recipes). But the real difference between the two comes in their motors. With an artisan mixer, you can choose from three types of motors:

Dual Speed – This two speed motor moves at a quicker speed when it’s called for. For example, in order to make the classic French dough, you’ll want to crank your bowl up to speed 1 (15 minutes) and then 3 (3 minutes). While this is all fine if you’re mixing small batches with a small stand mixer, it’s not so great for making large batches with a large mixer. Many people use this type of motor exclusively for smaller batches.

Continuous – This three way motor mixes continuously without having to switch speeds…everything mixes at one speed throughout the entire recipe process. This is the most popular motor type, and it’s the one you’ll want to get if you’re going to use your mixer often.

Continuous-Pulse – This three way motor mixes continuously without having to switch speeds…everything mixes at one speed throughout the entire recipe process, but you can also pulse it with a quick switch like on many stand mixers. This is the best of both worlds for those in love with classic mixing bowls, and it’s a nice option for those who have a little experience mixing.

As you can see, if you love the classic look but want a modern KitchenAid mixer, there’s an option for you! Classic KitchenAid mixers are great if you’re looking for something a little more basic. They aren’t quite as nice as the newer ones, and they certainly don’t have all of the fancy bells and whistles that artisan models do. However, they’re incredibly affordable and they come in a variety of colors – there’s no shortage of options aside from plain white or silver!

In short, classic KitchenAid mixers are great for mixing smaller batches with a traditional look. But if you want something new and modern, that’s where the artisan design comes in!

Artisan KitchenAid mixers are a fairly recent addition to the KitchenAid family, first hitting the market in 2005. They’re all about functionality, offering technology with a sleek look that’ll dazzle your guests. And since they’re all about function, most of them have a few extra features that your classic stand mixer just can’t compete with. Things like:

Pulse – Pulse is one of my favorite features! It lets you switch speeds on your mixer with just the push of a button, meaning that there’s no need for multiple motors and/or switches as there are with classic models. This also means that your typical recipe will never include the need for speed changes. This is perfect for those with limited mixing experience, and it’s also a nice option for those who are trying to keep things simple.

EZ Bake – This is one of my favorite features of artisan KitchenAid mixers! When you choose this option, your mixer will automatically stop mixing as soon as you place your ingredients in the bowl. (Think of it as a safety feature. If you don’t start mixing immediately, your bowl is likely to get too hot and burn the ingredients!) This means that while you’re mixing, you can place your ingredients in the bowl and go about your business. And remember – as soon as you start mixing again, the mixer will stop right back where it left off.

Mixing Options – This is a recent feature of artisan mixers introduced in 2016. It lets you choose the specific design of your bowl through a selection of colors. Pastel colors are all about subtlety, offering a little bit of color without taking over the whole space.

The classic line was first introduced in 1919, and were sold well into the ’80s. They were built on a traditional design – with a straight stand, wooden handles and retro looking attachments.  This style was retired in the ’90s when KitchenAid decided to start selling their newer models. Their new artisan line has replaced the classic as KitchenAid’s best-selling mixer, and it’s easy to see why. The artisan series is based off of a more modern design – they have sleek chrome stands, rubberized handles and an overall sleeker look than their older counterparts.

Another major difference between these two lines is that while they both offer similar options, they do them differently. The artisan series has a smaller number of attachments available, but the ones on offer are much more modern than their classic counterparts. For example, whereas the classic mixer line has a glass bowl that can be used for mixing and serving, the only option for an artisan stand mixer is a plastic bowl. This may be an issue for some bakers who want to display their beautifully decorated cakes in their kitchen.

The good news is that even though there are fewer options available with the artisan line, all of those available are high quality. Stainless steel beaters and dough hooks have replaced the wooden versions from the classic series, and all stands come with cover storage.

The customer service from KitchenAid is also a major selling point. They offer toll-free telephone support, as well as online support at the KitchenAid website. There is also a copy of the user guide available for download.

So if you’re looking for modern style and top quality attachments, then an artisan mixer is for you! But if you want a more traditional look to go along with your wood-paneled kitchen decor, then the classic line will be perfect for you. What is the difference between Artisan and Classic KitchenAid mixers?

Artisan mixers are more technologically advanced than their classic counterparts. Here are the main differences:

Pulse Control – Cream beaters and handheld beaters both have quick and slow speeds, but if you’re using a stand mixer you can’t change speed without switching attachments. Pulse controls give you that functionality without having to switch attachments. Ease of Use

– The use of cream beaters is quite simple: fill the bowl, turn on mixer, whisk for a few seconds and stop. The same can’t be said for stand mixers or dough hook attachments. You have to take it out of the stand, remove the bowl and set it aside. With the addition of pulse control, even those steps can be simplified. Better Decoration Options

– The classic mixing bowls that come with stand mixers are literally the same bowls that came with your grandmother’s mixers. (In fact you could still find them on Amazon.) KitchenAid has made a nice selection of shapes, but they’re still not as fun or bright as artisan mixers. Color Choices – Case in point: the classics come in white or silver only. Artisans come in all sorts of awesome colors!

Do KitchenAid mixers last?

The answer depends on whether you’re talking about a classic or artisan mixer. Here’s how they measure up. Classic KitchenAid Mixer – The classic series typically lasts between 10 and 15 years. You can expect to get about 250,000 uses out of one of these mixers without any problems. Artisan Mixer – Most areas should be covered in warranty coverage that lasts from 5 to 7 years. (If you have any questions, please fill out our form below – we’ll be happy to help!)

What are the benefits of KitchenAid mixers?

The short answer is that they combine the latest technology with a classic stand mixer look. There’s also a lot of added value here – KitchenAid stand mixers are covered by a lifetime warranty, which means that if you do have any issues you can get them fixed for free! KitchenAid Mixer Warranties – Artisan Stand Mixers – 5 or 7-year limited warranty with an additional 10-year limited warranty on the motor.

Do new attachments fit on old KitchenAid mixer?

As always, the answer is yes! Even though KitchenAid mixers are modern and innovative, they still maintain the classic look that you would expect to find on a stand mixer. So if you want to update your accessory options with something modern, you can simply make sure to get new attachments that will fit on the old ones.
