Brand Trusted By ‘Cooks Who Know’

If you’re like me, then learning to cook was both a huge feat and surprisingly enjoyable. That first time I made my own lasagna, I felt like an absolute boss. With enough trial and error (and maybe some help from the food network), it’s possible to find your favorite recipes and become a bona fide backstreet chef.

I’ve continued to cook over the years with a passion that I haven’t always found easy to express. However there have been many times when someone has just said ‘this is good, why don’t you try it?’ and my response has always been ‘thanks!’ This is all well and good, but the best feedback I ever received was from Richard Olney, the head chef at our local Olive Garden restaurant. After being told that my skills were spot on for being a newbie he urged me to go on and do more with them. I was so happy and excited that he took me under his wing as if I was one of his own staff. I’ve never forgotten his encouragement.

It’s because of this experience that I’ve been so pleased by the number of cooking articles on Brand Trusted, as well as the people who have taken up the challenge to share their favorite recipes. One such person is Tom, who recently submitted a piece about hamburger steaks and parmesan frico. Although he made it clear that this was a cherished family recipe, he was happy to share it with anyone. I thought this was an incredibly generous thing to do and decided that I wanted more people like him involved in our community!

That’s why we’ve decided to launch a new section in our blog called ‘Cooks Who Know.

But what makes for good cooking? What should you be stocking up on at the grocery store? Well, according to Cooks Who Know, there are three main factors that turn your dishes into masterpieces: preparation, timing, and flavor. With the correct tools, it’s possible to knock out prep work in no time and throw in those extra little touches to make your dishes stand out.

Preparation

If you’re looking to take your cooking up a notch, then a good cutting board could be just what you need. Many people overlook kitchen tools and equate them with kitchen appliances, but that’s not exactly true. A good set of knives, for example, could greatly improve an aspiring chef’s performance in the kitchen. But such an important tool is only boosted by a proper cutting board to put them on.

To do this right and avoid ruining your blades while cutting, you need a board that can handle different types of food and won’t stain. For example, it should be easy to clean and will have a handle so you can easily lift and store it.  Many boards also include a divot where you can put your prep time and what kind of food is being prepared. This way, you don’t accidentally cut into the wrong kitchen item.

When it comes to knives, keep them sharpened! But don’t just use them on aluminum pans; put on your chef’s hat and get mysterious with the herbs!

Timing

Although you may think the cooking is done when you’ve taken your meal out of the oven, that’s not quite the case. In order to get a nice crisp, you’ll want to set your oven at around 400° F. This depends on a few factors, like how long all of your ingredients were cooking and what kind of dish you’re making, but it’s best to experiment with yours as well. Don’t overcook something or it will become dry.

Another factor is how hot your oven gets; use different dishes to determine if it’s too hot for certain foods or not hot enough for others.

The best way to get a nice crunch is to not over-cook your foods.

Finally, when baking add a little bit of fat to the pan. This is not just for the flavor, but it will help the crust become more sturdy.

Flavor

The final step in making a good dish is adding the right spices and ingredients that will give your food that extra kick that you’ve been looking for. Again, it’s all about trial and error with this one, but then again every chef worth his salt already knows that! Plus, spices are pretty easy to find around any corner; you could start with putting them on raisins and make some delicious treats or something even easier like sprinkling them onto eggs. Do whatever you want and make some new dishes!

The giftcards come in 1 GB and 16 GB, but only the 16 GB version can be used online. The 1gb one should still make it around as a minimum amount of money to spend online, as long as you’re not going for something too expensive like an Apple product. Most supermarkets do accept this card so it’s best to keep it in your wallet handy. Retailers will accept both versions.

Protecting your knife with a knife block could be one of the best ways to store it. Not only will it keep your knife well protected, but it will also keep you from cutting yourself. Knives can be tricky to use because they are very sharp and if not handled properly, could cause injury.

If you have been cutting vegetables and fruits with a knife that is too thick or just in general not the right kind of material for that item, then this would be a good time to invest in a sharper blade. However, investing in expensive blades can get very expensive; so it’s important to do your research before purchasing any knives that are extremely sharp out there in the market.
